At a Glance

The Rajasthan State as it exists today is the result of the integration of 19 former Princely States and was formed in April,1949 with which was merged in Nov.,1956 the former State of Ajmer, and has an area of 1,32,147 square miles and a population of 1,59,70,774 according to the Census of 1951. At the time of the formation of Rajasthan in April,1949 there were 15 state owned Power Houses with a total installed capacity of 13271 KW and an aggregate maximum demand on the stations of approximately 7483 KW as detailed below:

The Rajasthan State Electricity Board was constituted with effect from the Ist July,1957 by Government of Rajasthan Notification No. F.11/OSD(PWD)/57 dated the 28th June,1957 under the Electricity (Supply) Act,1948 which enactment has for its object the co-ordinated development and rationalisation of production and supply of electricity on a regional basis throughout the country in the most efficient and economical way.

The Rajasthan State Electricity Board is responsible for promoting the co-ordinated development of generation, distribution and supply of electricity within the State of Rajasthan in the most efficient and economical manner. With the formation of the Board the charge of all the electricity undertakings till then functioning under the Electrical and Mechanical Department of the Government were transferred to the Board.

The Board at present comprises of 4 Whole Time Members and 3 Ex-officio members:-

Besides above, the State Government has also constituted a State Electricity Consultative council which meets once in a quarter. Apart from the 7 members of the Board it includes the representatives of trade, industry, commerce, bank, consumers, railway and two public representatives.

In accordance with the provision of Section 69 & 75 of the Electricity (Supply) Act 1948, the Board is required to prepare and submit a report to the State Government its accounts and audit report and an account of its activities during the previous financial year and the activities which are likely to be undertaken by the Board in the next financial year. Such reports are placed by the State Govt., in State Legislature.

The State Government is empowered under Section 78A to issue directions to the State Electricity Board on questions of policy. In pursuance of this provision the State Government has directed the Board to revise tariff for supply of power only after obtaining prior approval of the State Government. These directives are being implemented by the Board.
